This can point to a faulty hard drive, but in my situation it appears to be something else. The question mark folder, as most people have found out, is a result of the MacBook not being able to determine a valid operating system location. Well after googling for a solution and finding none that worked for me I have discovered one that does work.
All this seems to point to a faulty hard drive. Prior to the broken LCD screen I had a problem, which a number of people seem to have, where on bootup a question mark folder appears, accompanied by around 5 clicking noises. This will have to be addressed soon though as the cracked smudge is spreading rather rapidly across the screen and people are commenting on the fantastic screensaver I have. I think one of the kids sat on the screen and cracked the LCD screen, and I have been putting off getting that fixed, due to both the cost and downtime involved. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Sometimes you need a wired keyboard for this to work. continue holding down option key until you see the startup manager screen.
